ShotKam App Settings Explained: How to Get the Most from Every Shot
If you’ve just started using your ShotKam or want to fine-tune your setup, understanding the app settings is key. From choosing the right target type to adjusting video quality and playback, each setting plays a role in how your footage is captured and reviewed.
In this guide, we break down every feature in the ShotKam app so you can confidently set up your device for the best possible results.
Home Page: Your Starting Point

When you open the ShotKam app, the Home Page gives you quick access to everything you need. From here, you can connect your camera, view your videos, and jump into settings. It’s designed to keep everything within a tap or two, which is especially useful when you're out in the field.
Videos: Reviewing Your Shots
The Videos section is where your recordings are stored and played back. This is where ShotKam really proves its value. You can:
- Watch every shot in slow motion
- Scrub frame-by-frame to analyze your shots
- Compare different shots to track improvement
Whether you’re training or reviewing a day’s shooting, this is where you’ll spend most of your time.
Calibration: Aligning Your Reticle
Before using your ShotKam, it’s important to calibrate the reticle so it matches your exact point of aim. A quick calibration ensures that:
- The reticle represents the bead of your gun
- Your playback analysis is accurate
- You can trust what you’re seeing on screen
Tip: Check your calibration whenever you change your gun.
Target Settings: Optimizing for What You Shoot
The Target setting adjusts how ShotKam detects movement and records video. Each option is tuned to different shooting scenarios.

Clays
Designed for clay pigeon shooting (sporting, skeet, trap, etc.)
- Records approximately 2 seconds before and 1 seconds after the shot
- Results in a 9-15 second clip at normal playback speed
- Ideal for quick target acquisition and follow-through analysis
Flying Birds
Best for bird shooting (waterfowl, doves, upland, etc.)
- Records approximately 3 seconds before and 3 seconds after the shot
- Produces a 18-30 second clip
- Helps capture lead-up to shot and reaction timing
Ground Game
Optimized for ground quarry (turkey, boar, deer, etc.)
- Records approximately 15 seconds before and 20 seconds after the shot
- Creates a 1 minute 45 second clip
- Useful for reviewing steadiness and shot placement
Paper Targets
For stationary targets and precision shooting.
- Records approximately 2 seconds before and 1 seconds after the shot
- Results in a 9-15 second clip at normal playback speed
- Focuses on accuracy rather than movement tracking
Gun Settings: Matching Your Equipment
Selecting the correct gun type ensures ShotKam properly detects recoil and triggers recording at the right moment.

Options include:
- Shotgun (Break-Action, Semi-Auto, Pump)
- Rifle (Semi-Auto, Bolt/Single Shot)
- Bow/Crossbow
Each setting adjusts sensitivity based on recoil patterns. For example:
- A semi-auto shotgun has a different recoil signature than a bolt-action rifle
- A bow has no recoil, so detection is based on shot release instead
Choosing the correct option prevents missed shots or false recordings.
Reticle Options: Customizing Your Aim Overlay
Your reticle is the visual reference point in your videos. ShotKam gives you several options depending on your preference:

- Red Dot - Clean and simple, great for most conditions
- Black Crosshair - Works well in bright environments
- Red Crosshair - More visible in darker or mixed lighting
- Gun Barrel - Shows barrel alignment instead of a reticle
- Reticle Off - Removes overlays entirely for a clean video
Recording Sensitivity: Fine-Tuning Shot Detection
This setting controls how easily your ShotKam detects a shot.
- High - Best for low recoil (e.g. .22 rifles or bows)
- Normal - Default for most users
- Low - Ideal for high-recoil firearms to prevent false recordings
If your camera is recording too often, or missing shots, this is the first setting to adjust.
Wake-Up Sensitivity & Sleep Settings
Wake-Up Sensitivity
Determines how easily the device turns on from sleep mode:
- High - Wakes with minimal movement
- Normal - Default setting
- Low - Prevents accidental wake-ups
Sleep Disabled
Turning this on keeps your ShotKam awake at all times, removes the need to manually bump the gun.
- Useful for stealth hunts (e.g. turkey hunting)
- Not recommended for long periods, as it will drain battery faster
Advanced Settings: Dialing in Your Video

Video Format (Resolution & Zoom)
This setting controls both clarity and zoom level.
- 4K at 60 fps | 2x Zoom (Wide Angle) - 44° FOV Maximum detail, wider field of view
- 2.7K at 120 fps | 3x Zoom - 30° FOV Recommended setting for clarity and slow-motion
- 1080p at 120 fps | 2x Zoom (Wide Angle) - 44° FOV HD footage with small file sizes
- 1080p at 120 fps | 4x Zoom - 21.8° FOV Same FOV as the Gen 3
- 720p at 120 fps | 6x Zoom - 15° FOV Added zoom for longer targets
-
540p at 120 fps | 8x Zoom - 11° FOV Maximum zoom for distant targets, lowest resolution
Tip: Higher resolution = more detail, but also larger file sizes.
Corner Overlay
Choose what appears on your video:
- Logo only - Displays the ShotKam Logo
- Date & time - Shows when the footage was recorded
- Date, time, and logo - Displays all available information
- Off - No overlay for clean footage
All information is in the bottom right corner of the video.
Record Time: Extending Your Clips

This setting adjusts how much footage is captured before and after your shot:
- Short (0.5x) - Roughly half the standard clip length
- Normal (1x) - Default (e.g. 9-15 seconds for clays)
- Long (2x) - Doubles clip length
- Extra Long (3x) - Triples clip length
For example:
If a normal clay clip is 9 seconds, Extra Long would extend it to around 27 seconds.
This is particularly useful if you want to analyze your setup or follow-through in more detail.
Playback Speed
The playback speed can be adjusted, but we recommend the default “Normal” speed.
Control how quickly your footage plays:
- 0.5x (Slow Motion) - Best for detailed analysis
- 1x (Normal) - Recommended, 1/3 playback speed (mimics how the human eye perceives a moving target)
- 2x (Fast) - Fast playback
-
3x (Full Speed) - Real-time playback (very fast, uses more data and processing power)

Tip: Once a video is saved at a specific speed, it cannot be re-saved at a different speed. For example, a video recorded at normal speed will be permanently saved at that playback speed. Changing the playback speed setting will only affect future recordings.
Device Name & Connectivity
- Change Device Name - Helpful if you have multiple ShotKams
- Revert to Default - Resets all settings to default
- Disconnect ShotKam - Safely disconnect from the app
Test Mode
Your ShotKam automatically saves video when it detects recoil. For testing at home, use the record button within Test Mode.
Final Thoughts
Getting the most out of your ShotKam isn’t just about recording, it’s about setting it up correctly for your style of shooting.
A few small adjustments, like choosing the right target type or video format, can make a big difference in the quality and usefulness of your footage.
Take a few minutes to explore these settings, and you’ll start to see exactly where you can improve with every shot.
